It was supposed to help.

They'd sold the Pinto for this -- Joyce white-knuckled and tight-lipped at the car dealership, trying to get the most money possible, because tickets from Indianapolis to Sacramento weren't cheap, even if, at 12, Will could still get a child's seat. They'd spent all this money, because Joyce had heard from a doctor who'd heard from a nurse from an orderly from another nurse that this guy in California was supposed to be the best.

But hundreds of dollars and an exhausting all-night flight later, they had nothing to show for it. The doctor had done all the same tests, EKG and blood tests, so many that Will felt shaky and dizzy afterwards. He'd asked a thousand questions and Will had talked until his throat was sore about the episodes, about the things he could see, about the place he sometimes went. And all the doctor had been able to say was, "Probably PTSD. You said he was lost in the woods for a week?"

She wasn't talking, but Will could tell his mother was starting to lose hope. She had that blank, faraway look in her eyes, she kept spacing out and didn't seem to hear Will when he spoke. Even worse, she'd missed the turn to get to the airport, so they'd missed their flight and had to rebook for another one, early in the morning.

So there they were, sitting in the Sacramento airport at three in the morning, waiting for their flight to begin boarding. Joyce had a now-stone-cold cup of coffee in front of her, untouched, and she kept nodding off where she sat. Will was on the other side of their luggage, just as exhausted, but unable to let himself sleep.

Instead he glanced down at where his long sleeves rode up, displaying the numerous bandages on his lower arms. It had taken the nurse multiple tries to find a vein for the IV, or to draw from, and Will sort of felt like one big pincushion. He absently tugged at the sleeves, looking around quickly to see if anyone had noticed. People liked to assume, after all.

"Runt, I'm over six million Earth years old, all humans are young to me." It's said with a chuckle. He's totally serious, though, he's old; you're young.

His seat gives a little shrug-jiggle. "If they were Cybertronian, but I don't know anyone small enough to take that as an alt." Would probably be an Autobot too, but be'll not bring up factions or war, it would only get the kid asking more questions.

"Maybe you're not that young, but he's that old. If you want to get melodramatic about it, we're chillin' with an ancient entity from beyond the stars." Sam was able to complete her sentence before sniggering, but not without really trying to stay sort of straight-faced. "Just one who happens to be more agreeable than the average."

Once Will was out and within arm's reach, Sam set a hand on his shoulder. She'd noticed that he was shivering again, already, and schooled her expression to keep from frowning in concern. (The kid had been anxious enough when she'd shaken her head at him, so she figured a frown was ambiguous enough for a fright.) Answering his question made it easier. "It's an ordinary skidoo, so no."

Oh his smirk is clear in his tone. "Yeah, on this planet. We just scanned your vehicles to blend in once we got here."

"Which brings me to something I've really wondered." Aware she should be steering Will back towards the building, and of the seconds ticking by, Sam stood where she was and ran her mouth a moment more. "How many places have Cybertronians gone and actually successfully snuck around thanks to having local machines large enough and common enough that something---or someone---who looks like one can go unnoticed almost anywhere?"

"Lots of places," he answers Sam easily. "There are places all over the universe where we're either not all the different or can blend in one way or another."

He turns his attention to Will again, noting the look, but not sure what to make of it. "There are lots of alien things out there, and I can fight any of them." How well he'd hold up to any given one is questionable, there are some he's pretty sure could prove a challenge, but that doesn't mean he can't fight them.

If it's rude to lean against Breakdown, it probably doesn't register as rude after the time he's spent with Sam. She's leaned on him, sworn at him, climbed on him---a very little---threatened him a time or two, and kicked him the once, so Will's remarkably well-behaved in comparison. Rather than be a bad influence, the skin-witch followed suit, one hand against Breakdown's side, the other planted on her hip as she considered the boy; Breakdown's answer got an acknowledging nod (which she was sure he'd see, somehow) but no more.

“Why d'you ask?”

Something about the boy changes. He'll unfold an arm from his frame to shift the two humans away so he can transform and pick Will up, the boy sitting in his palm as he studies the kid.

"Hard to fight something I can't get at, Runt." He big head tilts to one side a bit. "This unseen thing giving you slag?"

Now, more than ever, Will looked like a sick kid; haggard and exhausted, the something that had sent him to hospital after hospital catching up to the delighted awe real magic and an alien robot had inspired. There were tells in his face and frame, but Sam barely noticed---it was his aura that had her attention, and she eyed it with growing unease. The tacky, filmlike stain that was in it as much as on it didn't flare so much as densen, and she clenched her jaw at the sight. She looked to Will (Will himself, meeting his eyes) as he looked to her, but didn't have time to answer before being brushed back apace. She didn't scold Breakdown for his transformation but stepped back to better see the boy and ask, “Will... what have you been into?

Breakdown has the presence of mind to lower his hand again for Sam to get a better look at Will. He's a fighter, but he's also a healer. It was only partially happenstance the led him to take on the roll as medical assistant.

"We're not going to blame you for being outmatched, Runt." He really is using the term like a name, there's even a note of gentleness in his tone. Don't you let people blame you for that, kid, he'll smash anyone who tries.

The rest of that left Breakdown at a loss, though. He was a medical assistant...to his own kind. He glanced at Sam, his aura giving away that look to be a plea for help from her, even if his expression doesn't show it.

"What do you mean by 'wrong', wrong how?"

Once Breakdown lowered his hand, Sam stepped forward, planting both of her hands on the edge of his palm to boost herself up and join Will. Her movements were fairly graceless, but not at all uncertain; as soon as she could crouch by the boy, Sam had a hand on his shoulder. “Nobody's saying it's your fault; it's not. You're just a kid, could've followed, but saying it was something Sam never considered. Will didn't need to feel any smaller, any weaker, or any more helpless than he already did.

She noticed the look from Breakdown, recognized it for what it was, and looked back at him, her expression briefly uncertain: I don't know. I don't know, yet. She turned her attention back to Will a second later, once more giving his shoulder a light squeeze before she lifted her hand to rub at her eyes. She might've missed something when she'd first looked Will over; it wouldn't've been the first time she overlooked something in an aura because some unusual feature caught her attention instead... and the offness which had somehow saturated his aura was something she'd never seen before.

Sam drew a slow breath and lowered her hands, squinting slightly as she studied Will anew. As she scrutinized him, her hands met and began to work at each other. After a time, she frowned---not at Will, but in uncertainty.

"Just let her do her thing, Runt. If she can help you at all, she will." He's not sure if he's volunteering her, or just that sure that she'll do something if she can.

"I'm trying to see---well, shit, I'm trying to see what I can see. What I can pick up off you. Got a knack for that; it's actually how I met him." With the last word, Sam jerked her chin in Breakdown's direction, though her eyes continued to roam over Will's face and torso, flicking to his hands now and again. "Nothing I've read about auras lines up with my experience, so I won't ask if you've read anything about 'em.... but you know how weather systems look when the guy points out 'this front moving in' on the map, and it's all colour-coded? It's a very-very little like that. Everyone who's someone has an emotional environment, only physical stuff affects it, too. You've got something going on I've never seen before, but you've also got... a history of something like pneumonia? Is that right?"

Breakdown doesn't even think of what he's doing when he shifts his finger, curling it just a little to make it easier for Will to reach.

"It got inside you? Or put something inside you? Is it still there?" He's... not going to think about how gross that is. Organic bodies are so strange and gross. His concern outweighs any disgust, and he clearly doesn't think this is anything to be embarrassed about.

“You could say.” Sam's tone made her words sound a lot like I guess, yeah. She didn't say more, attentive the second Will inhaled to answer her. Her face fell a little as she listened, and she looked to Will, where he indicated, with fresh concern. “A what...? But, wait.”

Her tone hadn't been accusatory, not at all, but there was the way the boy had reacted to her shaking her head, to her frowning, and to his own accidentally dropping a couple of quarters. With those moments in mind, Sam reached out again, this time cupping her hand around Will's upper arm. “Like he said, we're not going to blame you. But we'd like to know whatever you can tell us about this monster, too.”

This talk of a place like this world but different perks his interest. He glances at Sam. "I think one of my CO's may have been to this place."

Honestly, he doesn't have enough details about Starscream's experience or Will's to say for sure, but it sounded similar at the moment.

Some disgust crossed Sam's face at Will's admission ('gross things') but it was tempered by sympathy and unease. From the look on her face, she might've been listening to a friend describing the stomach flu they'd suffered in detail, waiting for an opening to ask 'but now, you're doing alright...?' There was no sign of the outburst Will seemed to be expecting; instead, his arm got a soft, supportive squeeze. “I'm sorry. That that happened to you, that you have this.... bullshit aftermath to worry about. You got like, the worst way to end up in the mix. In every sense, you got a hell of a head start.” She offered a small, encouraging smile---it came easily, despite everything---before twisting to ask Breakdown what it seemed someone should.

“The fuck are your people even up to?”

Breakdown just gave a little shrug. "That wasn't something that was planned or anticipated from what I heard. We opened a ground bridge someplace, and the Autobots opened one right on top of ours. Something about that sent those who went through into some kind of shadow-mirror world or something, this place but not. I think I heard it was the Autobots who figured it out when a couple of their--uh..." He was about to say 'pets', but a pause to really consider who he's talking to makes him decide to not use such a word. "Human friends got trapped there."

It's Will's question that pulls Breakdown's focus back to the present issue. "I dunno, Runt. Sounds like you need a medic, but I only know medical stuff for my own kind. Point me at this monster and I'd be happy to smash it to pulp, but with you back here I don't know that I can help you with anything." He looks at Sam. "If either of us can do anything, it'll be her." He nods at Sam, then looks back to Will. "But that's for her to say. I know only some of what she can do."
